Dual overflow question??? Removing Black boxes

I have a 120 that has the black overflow boxes that go all the way to the bottom. In these black boxes are durso pipes (drilled in bottom) and the return lines

I am wanting to remove the GIANT black boxes. I've heard you can with no problems but.....

Anybody see any complications that could arise from this? I will need to put something over the pipe (guarding from fish or snails) but I figure an eggcrate box would be fine.

Figured I better check and see if anyone has done this first. Thanks for any help!

Without the Wier, you will loose the surface skimming effect, degrading light transmission.

You could drill the back of the tank and build a Calfo style overflow box, then use the holes in the bottom for for a closed loop, or just cap them off.

also if your return quits you will have 120g of water on the floor without the box. with the box you will lose the top half inch or so or however high you keep it.

if youre dead set of having no big black box id do what logik said, drill the back

What about the bottom bulk heads failing? Someone mentioned that happening on another thread. I know dave's tank has the closed loop in the bottom. What would the difference be? Or is it just another one of those gambles :)
Also, I could be looking at this wrong but I do not see how I would loose all my water being that the water would only go as low as the standpipe. (which isn't very low) maybe 3 inches? Coulnt go any lower than the pipe, right?

Any help is appreciated!

I wouldn't remove the boxes as my previous tank had been drilled but no boxes and my new tank has both. When I didn't have boxes you would have to deal with potential clogging.
