I just started using a dual reactor starting off with 1/4 cup gfo and a 1/2 cup of carbon how often or when do I know when I need to change them

Are you testing the water to see what the levels of the things you are trying to remove are currently at? If not you should be, then you can see the trend of these particular things dropping off, once they start to see them increase is when you should be changing out the media.
