Dumb Question about mag drive pumps

What is the "rubber flapper" and it's "holder" for in a mag drive? They are located directly in the middle of the output of the pump, and appear that they would slow the flow. I'm thinking of removing them, but want to know what they are for before I do. Thanks.

Well I'll be... I started to say that I'd never seen one in a mag pump. I hadnt until just now. Mag 5s and 7s dont seem to have them but I happened to have a standby Mag 12 so I checked and thear she be. I'd say it's for directing water out vs it rotating around the impeller more than necessary. Is it a perminent change if you take it out, or can you put it back?

Depending on how you have the pump's return, if you can get an air tube and eyeball how far the current pump blows the bubbles now vs after removal you should be able to see if it was a good or bad thing.

I did a search in the equipment forum and came back with no hits related to mag pumps for "rubber flap" either.

It's because the impeller direction is not always consistent upon start up. Sometimes it spins CW, sometimes CCW. If you remove it, your flow will likely drop.
