Dumpling/Bobtail Squid with Blue Ring Octopus

Dumplings bloody cute and already gobbled up 2 shrimps :)
Blue Rings very shy.

Dumpling just took a boxer shrimp and it actually swallowing as it's swimming!

Dumpling Burial, there' more to it but I just caught the last cool bit (was side tracked by Blue Ring)
 
I wake up and find this! Who's is it? Blue ring or the Dumpling? Eggs are pretty big and Blue ring doesn't sit on it so I'm assuming its the dumplilngs :) Now what should I do???

I feel like this is going to end badly. Keeping cephs together is bad; keeping a blue ring octopus is bad.
Keeping a blue ring with a semi-nonmotile cephalopod is very dangerous. Good luck.

EDIT: Where did you get the squid from? They are super rare.
 
I understand your concerns, I guess squids tends to attack anything but I don't think dumpling squids are that aggressive.
Blue ring so far doesn't seem aggressive at all.
First few times dumpling ran off if blue ring came close but now it doesn't care. Blue ring just crawls all over the dumpling (when its buried) and it just closes it's eyes and ignore it.
It been few weeks since I've had them together and so far there's peace :)
Blue ring doesn't touch the small crabs unless it's hungry,
dumpling the same except it doesn't touch the crabs at all.
Oh I caught both of them :)
 
Blue rings take the title as the most venomous animal on the planet. That squid will eventually get his if the blue ring feels threatened...

I'm pretty sure ANY ocotpus could take down a bobtail. They're tiny and very slow.
Although keeping blue rings is incredibly dangerous. I know I'm opening a can of worms, but why not release the blue ring and keep the bobtail? Plenty of people keep blue rings, but bobtail squid are very rare. I can understand keeping venomous snake, but keeping an animal with fatal poison is truly dangerous. So it's a double whammy: You could lose a very rare animal, or if you get really unlucky, your life.

Also, if those eggs are fertilized, consider donating them to a university once they hatch. Again, bobtail squid are quite rare, and a number of people on TONMO would love to acquire them.
 
bobtails rare in the hobby as I've never seen one in any LFS in sydney.
however theres heaps of them from where I caught it from, infact I caught 3 but only brought the smallest one home.
Blue rings not that rare but still I always wanted a small occy :)
I'm going to put the bobtail in my bigger reef tank soon, though I'll probably have to sat bye bye to most inhabitants :(

ofcause we can't :) but is there any evidence or record of these 2 creatures not being compatible? If no one trys then we will never know???
So far both are alive and looks happy to be so if I'm the first to try these 2 species together and keep them until they die of old age, have I not done something for the hobby? A proof, evidence that they can coexist.
So stop assume they are incompatible.
Oh for those that do not know, most venomous creatures are actually peaceful and shy, and based on my observation to the blue ring, it's very very peaceful.

Blue rings are just hard to anger. They are more of a hider than a attacker. Which explains why it didn't go after the squid. There is no proof in this, most of us are aware of what would happen when you put two aggressive predators in an aquarium together.. Thats just like a mantis shrimp co-existing with fish... it may happen, it may not, or it may only last for so long. I just don't understand why you are claiming the squid as "rare" yet you'll put it to risk...

Both animals hide rather than attack... it just takes one time where they will annoy one or the other and bam..


Also is that really a blue ring? I don't see any blue rings on it :confused:

Also, if those are dumpling eggs, try to breed them and make some sweet cash.. might even open a squid farm :D
 
I understand what you mean mate, though honestly speaking, I really think they won't cause any problem.
It is blue ring, scared the crap out of me when I was netting it out of the water... blue rings it flashed as so awesome yet my whole body just kinda froze for a millisecond and I was sweating! lol It flash little bit when it grabs the food but I don't really want it to flash :) basically I don't want to **** it off :) lol
With the eggs, so far so good, still there but apparently it can take like 3-4month! anyway it's gonna stay there unless it rots or get eaten :)
