Duncan advice

First of all I'd like to say hello to everyone as this is my first post.

I've had a single head Duncan for around a month and I had been target feeding it with pretty much daily with mainly mysis ,sometimes artemia and even small frozen pellets. I realise this was probably not needed but i'm inexperienced and it was taking it and keeping it down so it became my routine I suppose. It was opening up really wide, showed obvious growth, and it's tentacles (not sure if that's the correct term) were thin and pointed at the ends.

A few days ago it suffered some upheaval during a rescape and so is now in a different position although at around the same height in the tank. It closed up for a while when it was put back in and repositioned but opened up after a few hours which I understood and expected.

Since then it's tentacles have been stubbier and fatter, almost inflated, and it hasn't been interested at all in anything target fed, in fact (and this is the part that worries me) it's tentacles don't seem to be sticky any more. I used to give it the mysis, it would hold them and then close up to eat, but now it can't even hold them and doesn't react to being given them.

I've read the most recent 4-page thread in this section on Duncans and it does look like some of the photos in there, and in the thread someone mentions the tentacles shapes as well, but i'm not sure if it's a normal thing that happens maybe while it's readjusting or if it's an indication of a problem ?

Welcome to RC! I wouldn't worry too much about the coral not eating right now as long as it is still opening up and looking ok. Just give it some time to readjust.

I noticed that the slightest change in alkalinity or nitrates does this to mine. While rescaping you may have stirred up some crap that was in the substrate which may have caused your paremeters to shift.

Also, how many gallons have you got? If you're target feeding daily in a small aquarium you're going to want to water change often enough...

I run a 27 gallon w/ a duncan (and zoas). I water change every 9 days. Towards the 8th and 9th day my Duncan usually acts/is like/as you've described. Don't worry. Just keep those parameters stable.
