I would attach it to the rock. The duncan I have has grown a few new polyps since I've gotten it, but hasn't encrusted the plug it is on at all. I have the plug attached to the rockwork. It will likely fall over eventually if you don't fix it in place.
Need to? No. But as sde1500 said, they don't encrust. If you have any livestock that would disturb it, or if you want it to be more stable, glue/epoxy it to a small rock.
+1 just glue it in place. If you leave the coral alone it will probably be fine but will also likely never attach it's self to the rock and eventually will get knocked over by something.
Over time you will end up using a lot of SuperGlue gel, so getting it cheap and always having on hand is a must.
I used to buy at the $1 store, but Harbor Freight now has better prices. I get 10 tubes for $4.
Add some JB Waterweld and your coral will be securely anchored in place.
Make a small ball of WaterWeld. Super Glue it to the coral base and then glue it to your rockwork. No need to dry anything off. The glue will set nicely underwater.
Glue by itself will work, but the WaterWeld will form itself to the contours of the rockwork and hold better.
