Duncan growth

When I bought my Duncan, it had 7 heads. Those have since doubled in size and out of each branch I have at least 3-4 heads below the large one. Its great to see that, but the heads are not really growing up and out. Just kind of bunching up. I would love to see this thing grow nice and big, and would hate to have to frag it so that it can continue to grow. Is this normal?

If a picture is needed I can get it to close up and try to take one.

It kind of grows like a ball

There are 2 varieties: clustered and branching. Personally I do not see the branching variety very often. But the big ball of Duncan I think is a nice looking coral most non reefers see it as an anemone

It could be conditioned dependent, I'm not sure. That's why I said variety and not species. You will always see a Duncan labeled Duncan or branching Duncan. They wouldn't point out the branching if it wasn't something that was different than the norm.

Good to know that it clusters and turns into a big "ball" so to say. Mine is slightly larger than a baseball right now.

I have seen the branching style in a LFS and its very neat, but I wasnt sure if they all do that. Now knowing that there are 2 different types/styles makes me feel ok about mine.

I just have one more question about it. I have mine on the frag plug it came on, and placed in the sand right now. It seems to be happy and like I mentioned growing. Should I move it up onto the rock structure and permanently place it or leave as is?

Branch Duncan

Branch Duncan

I believe this is a branching Duncan in my tank I've been nursing from near death part in due to a urchin remodeling.

I put mine up high and feed every couple of days.
It's really taken off since.

Thanks. I was feeding mine a few times a week, but stopped. I would like to get it out of the sand bed and mounted onto the rock, but just not sure yet. I'll probably start feeding it again. It sure did like the extra food I was giving it.

Mine started out as a single head, then turned into a ball/cluster as more heads grew. Over time it flattens out, kind of like a table and grows out, instead of up. Here is mine with most of the heads open. It's 10 in.X 12 in.

Wow! Beautiful! I'll have to get a much larger tank if mine ever gets to that size. So do the heads underneath eventually die as the news ones grow over the top of them?

Yeah, the ones underneath will die from lack of light. When it is fully open, you can't see the dead heads.

Hi to all you Ducan Keepers. I was given one head placed it on some rock on the sand bed and it was doing really well, openned up everyday, good response to feeding. Over the last two weeks it has been closed up and I have notice a small hole appear on its stem?

My tank Para's are;

ALK 8.9
CAL 420
MAG 1395
TEMP 25.9 - 26.2C
SG 1.025-1.026

Any Idea's would be appreciated.

Thanks Ian

I have one Duncan "branch" for a year now and it never grew another head. While my Zoanthids and my Hammer/Torch grew extra heads (albeit slowly).

Welp. Time to find and buy some branching corals
