I'm pretty sure there really isn't any color variations, they might look different depending on the lighting used and other factors, but i'm pretty sure someone else posted on here as well that there is only one form of it.
was so excited when I finally got a Duncan, paid 30 bucks for one small head mounted on a disc. It wasn't too long after all these bright green branching Duncans started popping up at the LFS for 30 a head. Couldn't wait for the day when the Duncan would turn bright green and start branching. Well, it never did
The main difference is in morphology. You have duncans which ball and those that branch more and then there are plating types. The green base is more intense in the longer branching type at least in my experience. The ball and plating duncans are less intense and range from greeny to purple and I have one which is very grey/purple with a hint of blue.
My buddy has 5 or 6 different ones but after they've been in the tank for a year or so, they all look pretty similar. Some are more green, some more purple, but they are not much different.
One of my old duncan colonies that I recently let go.
My other colony that I kept is in the center near the zoa/paly rock. It never looked as great in my 20 long, compared to when my brother had it in his tank. I suspect it never liked my lighting.
You can tell the color intensity was better in his tank.
It is over 70 heads now. I hope in my new tank I can get it to color up how it used to be, the best looking duncan I have ever seen. Maybe I am biased.
Here is the Duncan I'm picking up today. Duncan's are my favorite coral of all. I have had two others one died and can't figure out why as it was a HUGE single head. I've got another one besides this one I'm picking up and it's only two heads but all three of these have been different colors and shaped heads.
