Duncan ?

I have a 1 head frag that has stopped extending fully. It is coloring up from the paler brown to a more green color, but one side is tightly closed, while the other is about half extended. Nothing is close to sting it, and everything in the tank is extending normally. Porites, purple tip acro, turbinaria, caulestra, acans, euphellia, blasto's and zoos are all doing great. The duncan is in moderate flow, and about 20" below a 250 halide with 130w pc actinics. Is it normal for them to go into a period of non-extension like zoo's? Do they do this when they are about to split polyps? I also feed the tank cyclopeze daily.

Mine have been staying closed for a couple of days now. They done this before and have been fine. The last few days I have fed heavily, perhaps they are going through a growth spurt.

My tang nipped at a polyp trying to get some food, this could also be the cause.

I have completely lost duncans because my alk was too low. In this situation the PE was fine but the skin peeled up from the base and the coral rapidly died.

So long as all of the tissue looks fine then do not worry. If you see tissue bloating or peeling then it may be too late.

what does bloated tissue look like. Mine have looked bloated for almost six months. I just thought it was because they were well fed. Care to elaborate.

They will get bloated after they eat, which is fine.

What I am referring too is further down on the calcium stalk of the Duncan. What happens is the skin starts to puff up and then it peels off and the head dies.

Good to know others have had the same experience. The tissue around the stalk is still brown and tight around the skeleton. It is just the head of the polyp and tentacles that look funny.
