Durso Overflow Help

I've had my 75g up and running for a few weeks now and thought I would be okay with the noise but wife and I can't take it anymore since the tank is right next to the couch in the family room. Tank is a used 75, off center overflow, came with a durso stand pipe that is not homemade. It actually adjusts up and down and the "U" at the top rotates around for some reason. I can move it from about an inch above the overflow to about 6" down in the overflow. No matter where I position it, it is loud. There is a hole in a stem off the top, I added airline hose with a valve and no matter how open/closed it is, its still loud. Only time I got it to be quiet I dialed my return pump back so much that when measured I was only getting about 40g an hour through the sump. Next thing I plan on trying is getting rid of my two 90 degree elbows on the drain and doing two 45 degree elbows to see if that helps, if not I don't know what else to try. I'd remove it but I think the previous owned glued it to the bulkhead ugh and switching to a herbie isn't going to work as I can't drill another hole unless I try to run one without the emergency drain?

Quick edit, I just pulled Up on my durso pipe and it looks like there are 3 holes drilled on the pipe itself and when I look close this seems to be where the water is rushing in and maybe causing the noise, I plugged them with my fingers and it got quieter, should I plug these holes up?

On my old tank I rigged up a homemade durso and I definitely did not have any holes on the standpipe portion. IMO you want all the water flowing in the top. Maybe someone has a durso with holes in the standpipe and can explain why this might be desirable.

The stock megaflow durso that comes with reef ready tanks have 3 holes drilled in the top elbow.........no idea why. I took that out of my tank, and build my own durso with no holes in the elbow, just the air hold in the top cap.

And durso drains are not made for high flow, when it starts flushing you have reached the max flow rate. Dial it back to where it doesn't flush any more, and you'll be in the comfort zone.

Slow the flow. If it is the "water fall" effect into the overflow itself, look up Hofer Gurgle Buster. It helped quiet things down a lot on my old set up.

I found out I have the AGA Megaflow durso set up. So I pulled the top "U" shape off the adjustable drain and turned it into a Herbie lol. Its a million times quieter and I still have the flow I want. I do not have an emergency drain but I've tested and during a power failure I still have about 4" of space in my sump, if the drain would ever clog It would only pump about 3-4 gallons into the display which it can easily handle

Did you install a valve on your drain?

I would love to make my durso silent, but it's the nature of the beast that keeps it from being silent.

I'm always looking for ways to quiet down my durso, it's the one thing that makes noise in my display. MP10's are silent, sump in the basement..........but the falling water in the durso stands out in a living room.
I have the flow turned down and that helps, but it also hurts the tank I feel. I'm not going to do a full siphon setup, don't want the return going over the edge since I have a full canopy on the tank.

The solution is called a herbie, works silently and I mean silent. Quick search and you'll find plenty of examples.
