No idea if the fish is still there. It had just arrived when I was there and was not for sale. They posted it in my local forum with other fish with prices but never listed that one. I may have to shoot them a PM and see what it is going for. It is a very tempting fish.

Agree, I have seen juvenile C. nahackyi and they don't look like that, and as Copps says, their range is way too far away. Whoever ends up with this fish let me know, I want tissue samples! That is the only way to confirm.

No worries Luiz, while I'll probably have to pound a couple of shots beforehand, I should be able to get you a sample... although this guy is tiny... what a fish huh? Are you aware of any records of multicolor north or west of Palau? I finally got a hold of Rich and he isn't... I knew the minute I saw this fish it was probably the daughter of a waif multicolor that spawned into the ferrugata population in PI... which is the hip thing to do apparently when you're a rare Centropyge species near Cebu...

Brian Griffin, the store manager, knows what's up and is not your average LFS guy... it would be nine hours round trip to where it is in Jersey... too bad I don't live where I grew up... then it'd be local. It'll be coming Fedex... who I trust much more than the other guys...

On Wednesday my wife and I took my wife's friend visiting from Ecuador into DC to the Natural History Museum... as I was looking at their priceless gem and jewelry collection I was thinking to myself how lucky we are in this hobby to be able to collect the priceless gems of our hobby for a relative bargain...

Thanks buddy... I'll keep everyone updated... this fish will not go in that system... muscling in a small Centropyge into an established harem is a tricky thing and I would not risk her life to that...

Anything is possible Matt, but you need to evaluate all of the factors... Centropyge multicolor is not documented from the Philippines, but it is found at nearby Palau... My suspicions are this specimen is an offspring of either a waif multicolor spawned at Palau or a pocket of multicolor somewhere in PI... As is typical when one species is rare and another common hybridization could occur... so it makes complete sense. What are the chances though that an undescribed morph of multicolor arose that just happened to look like C. ferrugata in a location wher multicolor is undocumented and ferrugata is one of the most common species? I'd say slim (very slim) to none...

Whatever the answer though this is big news to science... even if it were just an aberrant multicolor this would be the first record from north and west of Palau... that's another thing great about this hobby... these are not just exciting to us... but to the world experts in ichthyology and the Pomacanthidae family! I got in touch with Rich Pyle and he was blown away... how cool is that! Hopefully this fish survives transport, settles, in, and grows out... but the nice thing is that as long as I get this specimen I could get a DNA sample and we will have an answer as to what it is... and again whatever the answer it will be big news in the world of angelfish... If you don't think that is cool then get outta this thread!!:blown:

Marie you've provided some great info and made some great calls... but let's be honest... was it really that tough figuring I'd be interested in this fish?

It will go into its own 10 gallon QT for a while... and then probably into my subtropical display as the only Centropyge for a while as its small... down the line I may add to it but only when this will be the dominant fish of the group... although alot of things could happen before then... especially with a fish this small... let's hope it goes well...

Don't worry about sampling it fast, as I told you I am moving to California this fall, and it will slow down work in my lab. So wait to sample only when the fish grows some more and when you are sure it can take survive a fin clip removal well. I should have the lab operational again by October.

As for records, no, I am not aware of multicolor west of Palau, so even if it is just an odd looking multicolor (and not a hybrid) it is exciting scientifically.

This interesting fish came in the same shipment out of Cebu... it is one of the flame/rusty hybrids... I did not take this as I have a couple so it is still there at the store...

Interestingly the above specimen appears to be more flame than rusty... below is a shot of one of my more 50/50 flame rusty hybrids when it was freshly imported... they are now darken as they quickly got a suntan under the metal halide lighting...

So who's going to scoop the other one up?
