i have a 55 gallon, 3ft long, its a fowlr system. i was wondering if i could keep two of the smaller angels together. im new to angels and have read in books and sites that the min. gallon requirement is 20-30 gallons for these. i was looking at the coral beauty, flame angel, and bicolor. but i dont know if thats true. does anyone have any experience with this or expertise in the subject? thanks for the help

I wouldn't keep two in a tank that size. They are very aggressive towards their own kind. Unless you bought them as a breeding pair, which even then is risky, I would advise against having more then one dwarf angel.

In a 55 get an individual coral beauty, flame or potters it's just too small for more then one. IMO you need at least a 120 with lots and lots of LR to add more then one of these. If you really want a pair go with argis. Dwarf angels are beautiful, you'll be happy you got one. But before you do , what else is in the 55??

I am in the small group that disagrees with the above statements.
While it is always better to go as large as possible, many of the dwarf angels can be kept together in smaller tanks, if certain precautions are made.

here is one of my examples. While, it can be done, it does not always work. Some fish are just mean ;)

My flame and potters almost acted like a pair. This is a picture of both of them scaring away my baby mitratus.

I used to have a Coral Beauty, Golden, and venustus in my 58 (( still have the Coral and the venustus, the Golden was fighting with my clowns, and got too close to their Haddoni. )). Some minor chasing here and there, but nothing major -- more issues with the clowns.

55 gallons are 4 foot tanks...

You could probably do the coral beauty and flame, but why not a pair of one of the species to observe spawning behavior.

My multibar and flameback largely ignore each other. They'll take a halfhearted swipe now and then if they happen to bump into each other in the same spot but I've seen more aggression out of watchman gobies.

if i have to choose one, it will be the flame, but im hoping i can keep a coral beauty with it.. well at the moment i have no fish, my tank just finished cycling, so ima buy 3-4 blue/green chromis just to make sure the tank is ready.. then introduce the angel(s) as the last fish so that i could avoid having him harrass new additions.

thanks everyone for your suggestions, its very helpful :D

You should research the personality traits (if known) of each species, & go from there. C. bicolor is a pacifist, but they are a fish for an expert keeper. Plus, they are potentially destructive in a Reef. Reputation similar to the Lemonpeel. Avoid both of these, Lemonpeels are very aggressive.
You could try for a pair of some species, that is what i would do. Try a Cherub (C. argi) also known as Atlantic Pygmy angel or its flameback cousins. To do this, buy fish of different sizes. The more dominant, larger one should become a male.
Otherwise, just keep one in a 55 gallon.
Good luck!

Btw, wait a few months. Centropyge really need a mature, stable tank. I'd say 5-6 months. They especially like a nice crop of micro and hair algae in the Live Rock to graze on..

As I am writing this I will be looking over my shoulder for the Angel police (yes I said angel police) I have a flagfin and black velvet in a tank around that size. However, I only have them a pair of clowns and a royal gramma. These two angels act like a pair. keep in mind these are probably 2 of your gentler angels.

I think the key is lots of LR keeping them well fed and having lots of structure for them to hide out in and claim as their home.

Todd, what did you do with your Golden? I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a good healthy specimen when I had the chance two years ago.

It was always going over to the clowns and doing the raised fins thing -- then one night I didn't notice it. The next morning its remains was expelled by the S. Haddoni. I have since sold off the clowns, and things are a lot better.

IMO its all about space. I have a queen, flame back, and a golden. The each have their own place to sleep. I feed a variety of foods including live sponge. I have a lot LR and even pvc pipe for hiding. They are also similar in size

You are aware that the queen angelfish is not a dwarf angel and get quite large
