Any LFS should be able to get you one within a month, probably less as they are frequently available in shipments from Hawaii.
Actually they are rare to get and that's why you pay more to get them. They are hit and miss type of an eel. Sometimes the divers find them and you might see them 6-10 times a year from various fish stores like I have from Sacramento to the Bay Area and some years I see them maybe once a year. The problem is trying to find one that looks like the pictures we see on the internet. I have probably seen 1-2 that are that bright yellow we see on the internet pictures and they are usually double the price. It's a beautiful eel and smaller then what you are accustom too. Don't be alarmed if your local fish store can't get one for you in a month like the previous poster suggested. And don't be surprised if you find one that is a pail yellow. It could be from stress or maybe a deficiency in there diet from the store but almost 90-95% of the ones I have seen in real life are a pail yellow.
Actually check out eBay. Looks like I found one that was for sale for $125. Which seems a little to good to be true but worth checking out. If the picture is of the actual eel then it's a steal. The colors are pretty good. If it's a general picture then I would be Leary. You will probably have better luck online then a lfs. Always ask for an actual picture instead of a general picture when trying to contact the online store. Good luck

I happen to know of a prominant wholesaler that has multiple melatremus eels in at this moment, and have dealings with another supplier that brings them in wth approximately the frequency I previously mentioned, although the price found on ebay is significantly less expensive than will be found through an LFS.
