Dwarf Seahorse Tanks

those are absolutely beautiful

my tank is tacky/cheesy to the extreme-- but i love it!

and they love it too
i will try to post pics

but i have 1 adult male
1 adult female (she was born in my tank- she is now 7/8 months)
2 or 3 3 month fry
1 4 or 5 month old male juvie! hes sooo adorable i love him!

i love my seahorses- i have had them for close to a year now- one of my males recently died- i figure from old age since he was wild caught and i have had them for about 8months- but he bore a few batches :D

Here are some more pics of some of my past horses.

I like the male in the third pic! He's got alot of cirri. Someone should selectively breed dwarves to have lots of cirri! It'd be neat...IMO....

I dont think that its soley determined on genes for ciri

all of my adults didnt have cirri and then when my fry were born into my hair algea infested tank :) they grew the ciri and they are beautiful!

also.....i have a 1g petco tank....with a hob filter and a 18w clip on light.....is 1g too small for dwarfs?

i would have live sand and some LR,also some macro algae.....maybe let it become a pod farm before i add any horses..

those are full grown. The 4th one down is giving birth. Ill post some pics of some babies later. tehre really really tiny.

The only problem about a tnak that small is its going to be a pain to keep the water clean.

Here are some more pics.

I got mine at walmart for $36 i think. its 5.5 gallons. it comes with a small power filter but it sucked up one of my horses. I found a small air powered filter that i replace the power one with. I'm actually selling my horses if anyone is interested. Tank and all. I think i have 5 left that still need to be sold. I just don't have time to take care of the little guys any more.

How much are you selling them for? I live in New hampshire. It's tough to see what color they are and the actual size? Are they hippocampus zostrae (spelling could be wrong). i have a 5 gallon eclipse I could put them in. A 34 gallon dedicated seahorse tank and a 90 gallon reef tank with both fish and coral. They cannot go into this tank. They'd go in one of the other dedicated tanks. Is hatching live brine shrimp a lot of work?

That 5gal tank would be perfect. The others would be WAY to big. There Dwarf seahorses. Not sure on the Real scientific name. There about 1" or so long. color varies as they seam to change depending on whats in the tank. I had white sand in the tank and they were more of a brown color but when i put black sand in the tank there more yellowish. Hatching Brine is easy. Just get a 2liter some brine eggs and an air pump and your good to go. I have 5 horses left but can order more. I have them on my site www.SaltCritters.com

Where are you located? I don't see any address on your home page. What would be the shipping charges on them?

I get worried about their survival rate going through the shipping process.

It depends on how many you get. It usually runs between $25-35. THey ship really well. I had one order a few years ago that the post office screwed up and they were in the box for 5 days. I opened them up and they were all alive somehow.

scientific name: Hippocampus Zosterae (Greek: hippos = horse, kampi = curve)
and then I read this on seahorse.org
Traditionally I have read that Zostera is derived from Greek, with "zoster" meaning "belt" or "strap shaped". Most authors assume this was in reference to the shape of the leaves.
however there is also rumor they are named after the seagrass zostera but there is reason to disbelieve that

Brine lose all of their nutritional value after 12 hours from hatching so even though their is food in the tank it is slowly starving the dwarfs as they are getting no nutrition from them.

I generally run a filter to remove any uneaten BS just prior feeding the next batch. If have a BS hatching failure, as I did this morning, I add a pinch of Spirulina powder and 5-7 drops of Selco to my 5 gal tank. My theory is that I am feeding and enriching the more than 12 hour old BS. This has never seemed tto have an adverse effect on my seahorses.

I'd be interested to hear what some of you think about doing this.

I put a sponge in my tank and some pods a few weeks ago. There are so many pods in there now i probably donet even have to feed the little guys. I still do tho.
