ok so ive had this rock full of ricordeas for about 2 months and then all of a sudden one morning when the vhos went on i saw this little urchin well at first i only got a view of its spines, so the spines are like a purplish color with green tips and then finally i just got a good view of the urchin because it finally left the rock it was under, and the urchins body is basically black and where the spines connect is almost a light grey whitish ring, no "eye" and the center has a almost crater. ive watched this little guy for a while and so far i havnt noticed anything harmful it has done now i dont mind if it eats some coraline or anything just making sure its not some evil little hitchicker ;) i dont have a good enough camera to take a pic yet as i spend all my money on more corals and other needed equipment that i never have enough of ;) BTW the urchin is about the size of a quarter. thanks all

My friend has had one of the same kind of urchins in his 100 gallon SPS for over a year and nothings "wierd" has ever happened to suggest that it is not safe.

Is this the one??

Looks like a brown short-spine urchin. Sealifeflorida.com sells them, so if your rics and rocks are Caribbean in origin, it could be a match. Wetwebmedia seems to think they're ok.

ya he looks alot like that little guy but the white rings are as bright as that and the tips are a little more noticable green and the spines more purple but it also looks younger than the on in your pic audioadict... thanks for the info i guess ill keep the little guy i dont mind him i just diidnt want him crawling into the huge rock formation without knowing he wasnt going to create any rukkus

the colordifferences you described fall wll withing the broadnatural coloration for these guys.
