Dying fish?

Hi I currently have a newly set up 24 gal tank with two damselfish, one yellowtail and a black one. The black one just tonight started breathing really hard and is not eating. It seems to me that he might be in his last stages of life. He was doing fine before I replaced the filters in the back by putting in Chemipure and purigen from the stock filters. The yellowtail, however seems just fine. I tested the water and the Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - 0, PH - 7.8. I know the PH is low but could that be the cause? I do have some diatom growth on the sand and am ordering a cleanup crew tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to save his life??

Ph not low enough to cause this problem. Maybe being picked on by the other damsel. They are agressive fish. Raise the ph of the tank with buffer. Do a water change meanwhile. Damsel not worth treating. At $3.98 a pop not worth the trouble.

The value of a fish is the attachment someone has to it. If your cat or dog gets sick, you can get a new one from the pound for a lot less than taking your current pet to the veterinarian.

However, I agree aggression may be the cause. Your pH may be low due to a build up of carbon dioxide in your tank so make sure you have good surface agitation for proper aeration. You may want to consider returning one of the damsels to the LFS when you get your CUC, they are known for being tiny terrors. Best of luck with your fish.

Thanks for the help guys! The black damsel ended up dying overnight. From what I've seen between the black and the blue damsel though, it seemed like the black one was a bit more aggressive towards the blue one. Not sure what happened there. I guess I'm more worried about something being wrong with the water, but the blue damsel seems to be doing just fine. I guess I'll have to wait it out and maybe do a small water change or something. Thanks!

Sorry about the loss. Maybe when your ready replace with a clown fish. Check all water quality parameters first before addition of livestock.
