Dying torch

So I purchased a beautiful 3 head torch and initially it was like a purple color with yellow tips fully extended and now it lost a lot if not most of its color and it keeps receding into itself. Now I have a frogspawn which doing great and a hammer which is huge. I also have SPS that are brightly colored and encrusting and growing great. It's just the torch. It is on the sand bed almost under one of my mp10's. not too much direct flow mostly undertow. Can't it be a flow issue should I move it away or does it need more light since its on the sand bed. Any help

I have found torches are more difficult then the others. It seem to me the flow is very important. Mine all eventually fade away.

So more flow or less flow. I have three vortechs so I can def give it more. But if less is the case I will move it

in my tanks regardless of size, the torches are about halfway up. some just under a powerhead some not. maybe bring it up and power feed for awhile. good luck

So will a torch kill a strawberry shortcake if it touches. Not too many spots left in my tank for placement of this torch. For sale soon lol

That is the 64000 question. I clearly have not got it right yet. My longest living torch is in medium flow right now. It clearly moves in the direction of the flow.

Lmao. Unfortunately corals are like all of us, every one is different. You are just gonna have to move it around until you find it a happy place.

I would look at what you have changed recently...use of GFO...water is probably cleaner than it was...

I'm under the impression LPS like slightly dirty water...you've had it for a few months now...and its just starting to look different...is look into any recent changes...increased flow and since you brought GFO back online....moderate light in flow is my suggestion

My purple-tip torch was growing great in strong but random flow (vortechs), ie. you could watch it's 'arms' get tossed around strongly every 20-30 secs and less so at other times (but never still). It was in the bottom third of my tank receiving around 150 par.

Parameters were :

nitrates = 0
phosphates = 0.05
calcium = 460
pH = 8.2
Temp = 80F

I would say it would sting the Strawberry shortcake . dont put it there , i never had luck with nice torches , the cheap ones always lived , the nicer they r the faster they die ...mine did better with lower DKH, most of my lps do better on the neautral water , high alk gets my lps mad but the sps love it ...mixed reef can be tricky to please them all.

I think u hit the nail on the head Ryan. When my alk was around 5,6,7 it was fine once it got in the 8,9,10 range SPS got happy LPS said what the hell

I've been told alot of reefers keep there's high seven to low eight range in mixed reefs to keep everyone happy but sps breaks easier high dkh stronger the corals skeleton so got to find a happy median and stay there going up and down will just **** them off more its ok if ur tank runs off long as it stays off that's when corals are happiest besides they get use to the water conditions that's how I was explained not sure if this will help at all
