I have an established e-170 red sea aquarium, and just bought the undercabinet sump upgrade. Is there a way to install this to my current aquarium without shocking my current inhabitants???

I don't think there will be much difference. Just make sure the water is as close as possible to tank water

Are you familiar with this system? Can I just turn off the pumps, drain the back and open the holes to hook up the pipes? Or do I have to take the water all the way down to below the bottom vent?

Post a picture of the back; if that's an Overflow Box with plugged drain then I'd say you don't have to drain the tank.

Hmm. I wasn't aware there was a bottom vent. I thought it was just the top return.

Maybe ask in the Red Sea forum?

The system was designed to be upgradeable to a sump-based without much hassle so you should be able to do it without draining the main display area. All you need to do is drain the back skimmer chamber and hook up everything else.
