Easiest breeding fish.

Hi everybody,

I've just been given the all clear from my parents to start up a little breeding setup in my room, with a thirty gallon and a few ten gallon tanks. The only problem is I can't decide what to breed.

I've been doing lots of research on Bangaii cardinalfish breeding and I've read the articles written by Frank Marini and they sound like a good option.

But, I've also been hearing that some seahorses are relatively easy to breed if you keep on hatching bbs for the young. Is this true?

Lastly a guy at my LFS recommended Discus, but I've heard that they can be tricky especially with the fancier colours and paterns.

I've kept seahorses and discus before so I'm not a newbie to keeping them, just breeding them.

So my main question is what out of the fish would be the easiest to breed. Oh, by the way, a few fish shops around me said they will buy Bangaiis of me if i breed them.

Cheers,
Daniel

Daniel,

Pick a species that interests you first. Then try to breed it. You will find it much more interesting and rewarding if you are interested in the type of fish from the begining.

That said, I personally would say you couldn't go wrong with seahorses (as long as you have a tall enough tank), bangaii typically like tanks 40 or larger, clownfish would be a great choice, but will take a year or more to get going. You can speed things up if you buy a spawing pair.

Thanks for the reply.
The more I read about them the more bangaii's interest me. On the other hand I haven't done a great deal of reading on breeding seahorses but the stores around me already get aquacultured seahorses so I'm not sure if they'll buy mine. I'll give them a call tomorrow and do a whole lot more reading tonight.

Cheers,
Daniel

Bangaii have just been list on the endangered species list and that could be a good reason to breed them.

Not trying to to influence your decision or anything, but just look how cute our Banggai babies are. :)

I'm thinking about breeding them too...my interest started when I saw some babies at a friends house, he gave me one, and he is growing pretty good. All I've fed it so far is frozen cyclopeeze

I just set up a 33G long divided into 4 to grow out the Bangaii's I've been breeding. It was too difficult (Too many casualties) only using a divided 10G to grow them out

good luck
