Like the titles says: Is there an easy way to tell if a male bangaii cardinal fish has babies in his mouth? I've got a pair and I've noticed lately that the male will sometimes take a gulp of water and really expand his throat. I doubt this is anything, but I want to know for future reference so I'll be able to tell if they eventually breed. I know if the male's mouth looks like it's about to burst, but is there a way to know earlier on?
Thanks,
Bryan

his mouth will look like a bulldog.
if you google banggai cardinal breeding and images, you'll see what i mean

+1 on the no eating. Mine never seems to be obviously holding for a week or two (maybe female not producing many eggs?). Every time the big mamma and pappa get together, the only things I notice is:
1) the male wont come out of the back of the tank during feeding very often, and if he does, he just gets real close to the food, looks sad, and goes back to hiding....must be depressing to not eat for 3 weeks.
2) usually the male gets slightly darker on his front half....have read various causes for this, but usually stress apparently....
3) and beyond the no eating, being reclusive in general....usually realize he is pregnant during the "where the ______ is daddy bangaii at" part of my day every couple months.
best site I know of for all things bangaii:
