Ecotech pump positioning + Gyre flow

Hi,

I have an ecotech MP40 in a 2x2x4 (120 gallon tank). It is positioned on the front left side of the tank sending water parallel to the long face. I also have a Tune 6000 on the back right side. I also have an ecotech MP10, which I plan on putting on the back left wall, facing forward. However, at full power for the MP40, the pump digs a hole in sand on the far left side. The bottom sand at the front is completely undisturbed, except at the far side of the tank. Presumably, this is because of turbulence when the tank hits the far wall.

I'd like to achieve gyre flow and not have huge divot on the front right side of the tank and I'd also like to run the all pumps at full power at least part of the time.

Any ideas?

thanks,

hi
ive got a reef 400 with a mp40 on each end. high as possible (6") and smack bang in the middle of the ends.

i run 90% constant 6hrs then reverse to the other end( i will be dropping this to 2hrs) . my rock work is very open shelving but after 5 mins i get a full tank gyre.

imo the jargon over laminar flow etc is unfounded. that said i wouldnt aim a jet type nozzle at one coral of any type for a long period of time.

excuse my paint skills lol but the pic shows from just one mp40 the amount of back eddies and flow intrupts which is anything apart from laminar.

with out seeing your rock work id generate a laminar flow along the back of your rocks ( if you left a gap along the back of the tank) this will pull in water from under the rocks etc helping with detrius and dead spots.

leave that for 15 mins then set your mp10 on the surface generate micro bubbles and watch the flow. film it then switch off. now place the mp40 to generate a reverse laminar flow. once again use the mp10 for bubbles and adjust the flow and position to include as much area as possible, use your vid to make it reverse flow.

set a timer up for the tunze run say 2hrs. def no more than 3 use the mp10 to assist the tunze in flow. then reverse the flow using the mp40 for 2hrs etc . rocks take care of the true laminar effect.

as for the sand if youre tank is sps whats more important some sand or the health and growth of your sps.

lps or softies just tweak the flow down. perhaps on the off cycle use you mp10 to make a little pulse wave to help lps (mainly torches and hammers) to expand out
