I am a chemistry teacher at Highlands Ranch High School, and in the process of setting up a coral reef tank in my classroom, with the intention of using this hands on experience to learn the chemistry involved in a reef.

I've had quite a few donations so far, and the tank is up and running, but don't have any live rock. If you have extra, and would like to donate some, please contact me.

Hey Mike,

My daughter is a Jr at HRHS. How much rock are you looking for? I have a few spare pieces, as well as other stuff you might be able to use. Drop me a PM or shoot me an e-mail.

The donations for this saltwater fish & reef tank have been overwhelming! Thanks a million!!!

With only a clownfish and a couple of snails and hermit crabs, I have 150 students a day who are thoroughly enjoying and fascinated with the tank, plus students I don't even know stopping by!

I'd like to add a couple other livestock specimens:

2 coral banded shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
2 sally crab
1 longspine or 1 royal urchin
1 yellow tang
a second true percula
1 bubble anemone

Please contact me if you would like to donate any of the above items.

Mike, Would you like some beginner corals, Xenia, mushrooms or leathers, If so I can have some ready for you, as well as the mag float we discussed earlier.
Chris

Mike came by yesterday and picked up a few things, he was saying how neat it was to have so many kids coming into his classroom, even some he has hardly ever seen before. Who knows what might spark a kids interest into learning more. He did say that he is using a 2 bulb VHO lighting, and though he hasn't asked, I am sure the tank could use more light.
Seems like a great guy,
Chris

Yep... he needs better lighting. Sadly I didn't have any extra for him, but I beleive he is currently running a 55g tank.

I did dig out a skimmer, pump, wet dry, refractometer, test kits, snails and crabs as well as some other goodies for them. The kids are fascinated and having a blast.

Remember what it was like the first time you saw a shrimp, urchin or colorful fish? He's got bunches of kids going through that same level of fascination each day. Pretty cool.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out so far.

what type of fish do you need

I think he was looking for a perc or ocellaris to go with his existing clown. The best way to reach him is at the e-mail he posted above.

He picked up a cpl diamond gobies, bicolor blenny, cleaner shrimp & fire shrimp, sally lightfoots and a small anemone. That is when I heard about the lighting and became concerned, it is a standard 55 gallon. I also don't have any better lighting for him, and thought I would throw it out to the group.

If anyone has any lighting that needs repaired to donate. I will do the work. Everything I have is too big or too small. I do have some skimmer bodies and some other loose odds and ends so just let me know and Ill raid my garage.

This 55 gallon tank has become nearly as popular as a Friday night football game!! I normally have dozens of students stopping in every day during their off hours to test the chemicals, feed the fish, wipe down the glass, change the water, and best of all, explain to their friends about the tank and its inhabitants. I especially get a huge kick out of them explaining how those cleaner shrimp eat parasites on fish!

A bubble anemone and an engineer goby are still on my list, and the lighting is pretty dismal...although the soft corals are doing fairly well so far!!

DARC has been extremely helpful in this endeavor, and I appreciate all of your support!!

Mike

I have a 150w HQI ballast and sockets that I can part with (needs a reflector), and I can probably catch a pep shrimp for you as well.

I'm in HR.

Let me know.
