I have lost two to climbing out. If there is ANY way for them to get out, they will find it. Take the smallest opening you think they can fit through. They can fit through something half its size. It's not an issue of it might climb out. If there is a way, it will find it, probably within a week.

The only ways to keep them contained are a full hood going around every edge of the tank, lowering the water level in the tank many inches, or building an acrylic riser wall around the edge of the tank (still risky).

I know they're supposed to be aquatic houdini's, but in my experience (I've had 2 snowflakes), if they have a hiding space and you feed them regularly, they won't jump. I don't know if I was just lucky, but I had 1 in a partially covered tank and one in an open top tank.

new school

sorry i really should have said before but its not my tank, just my idol tank lol

but that tank does look to have a tight lid on it

yes you can add eels to any SPS tank..i can assure they will not bother any corals!!!!!!!

only problem...they will eat any shrimp for sure....crabs quite possibly and .......small fish are welll as the SCOTS say RUDDY screwed.......

also....an eel WILL jump...guarrant...fing....teeeddd....they will crawl under the couch and out the front door and swing by your neigbors if you arent careful....could be a good thing if you could teach them fetch....but that aint happening

put a glass top on and add a couple of dragon morays...been itching to see SOMEONE ELSE do this

I pulled the trigger! Picked the snowflake up from a local reefer (abfleck) and I couldn't believe it, was running it open topped. He's never had a problem with him jumping but I decided to put eggcrate over the top for at least the first couple of weeks.

Here he is, I'm looking for names so shoot away. My fish are fish but an eel has to have a name!

people who keep eels without cover are NUTZ!!! buy a cover and keep it on there. Or plan to have a new belt when the thing is dried up on your floor.

The biggest problem I had is it would constant move out the sand from under the live rock, so the aquascape was constantly shifting, so I was continually picking up toppled corals.

your gonna have lots of fun with the eel....for about a year...he is going to grow and become more aggressive over time....in after this year you are going to be the guy who is trying to give away an eel...

oh yeah....he will jump....is he taught to feed from a stick???if he is then he will jump everytime he gets hungry

why would eating from a stick make him jump?
It would be hard for him to get out of the tank with the eggcrate that I have on it now. It fits perfectly into the groove and it's duct taped down. I'm sure he could find a way but it would be very difficult.
