as the title suggests what is the "perfect" eel for a 75g as the only inhabitant

the 75g sits right next to my computer so it cant be extremely skittish but its not required for it to be an "out and about" specimen either

thanks for your input

edited to add.

tank only has water in it at this point so i have plenty of time to research the suggestions

The problem with asking this question is you are going to get a multitude of responses and most of them will not agree. You will have the group of people who think most any eel will be "fine" in that size tank...probably because they have done it. You will have people who will tell you that you can put whatever you want in there, as long as you trade it back to the LFS when it gets too big. And then you will have the people who will think that a 75g is inappropriate for most all eels because they won't be "happy" in a tank that small.

Look at the dimensions of the tank, think about the maintenance involved in keeping the water quality high with the feeding regimen of an eel and then research what eels are in the pet trade and how big they get. You'll be able to get an idea for yourself what species would work well for you.

My personal opinion (again, some may disagree) would be Gymnothorax miliaris.

thanks for the reply

filtration/water quality will not be an issue because it will be plumbed into the sump/refuge system currently being built (gathering parts now) in the "basement" with other tanks incorporated as well total system volume will be approx 3000g...the eel is just an idea and not a requirement

yeah i know ill get the extremes on both ends of what is a good eel for the 75g

i would do 1 of these
-goldentail eel(the "banana" morph would be nice)
-fimbriated eel
-yellowmouth eel
-japanese/hawaiian dragon eel
The last two get a bit larger but to be realistic, they wont reach maximum length and considering there are no other tankmates, should be a good fit.
Another note, with good enough filtration i think you could pull off 2 goldentail eels which would be a nice contrast(one normal morph and one banana morph)

No matter which one you choose, it's a good idea to use whatever way works best for your set up, to keep the eel from escaping. They are reeeeeeeally sneaky!
