Are there any eels that are reef safe? Or do you have to keep them in a separate tank? I'd love to have one, but not at the expense of it eating all my fish.

Check out a zebra eel or a golden dwarf moray depending on the size of your tank

There are eels to eat your crustaceans and eels to eat your fish. Echidna and gymnothorax. Stick with the echidna, snowflake is a great "reef safe" eel with a bit of colour pattern people enjoy Hope this helps (though there are MANY different eels, this is just one that is common in the trade and usually inexpensive with not TOO much risk, so I've seen) Enjoy and keep us updated if you get one!

I've seen snowflakes at my LFS. Does anyone have personal experience with them?

Will I need a firm lid or will netting suffice?

Zebra would be your best bet but will get pretty large and will need at least a 6 ft tank once fully grown. Skeletor eels are also relatively tame with fish. Both are a possible danger to your CUC with the zebra still being a safer bet for both fish and CUC.

I own a zebra eel does not mess with any of my fish they swim in front of his face and he does nothing I think they are your best bet the only thing is on a reef your rock might have to be secure so when they roam at night they don't knock s-- t down

Snowflakes are notorious escape artists - any opening big enough to fit their small skulls through is big enough for them to get out. Bird netting might be small enough, but could be pushed aside or, worse, cause the eel to get stuck if it tried to push through it.

They will eat shrimp and crabs. They mostly ignore fish, but sometimes become aggressive when they reach adulthood. If that happens, they are a risk to even bigger fish.

Zebra eels are a much safer bet over the long term, but do get bigger than snowflakes. They will also eat crabs, I think.

zebras are by far the best in terms of not eating fish...will eat your crustaceans though. Snowflakes are good when small, but I've seen many snowflakes that would eat fish that they can catch. With larger fish, snowflakes are good, but not around small fish in the long term
