Egg Crate and Pistol Shrimps

Does laying some egg crate down under my live rock have any impact on a pistol shrimp assuming I do not cover the entire bottom? I would think if you layed egg crate down and then covered with sand the pistol shrimp would be unable to make a good home of tunnels etc... Any harm with putting a little 4 inch square under main rock supports and let the little guy dig around that? Im setting up a 20 gallon and debating this. MY 105 gallon has star board with an acrylic rod used to keep the rock work from tumbling. Was just thinking of doing something different in the 20 gallon office tank.

The sand bed would need to be extensive enough... honestly what I did was a small layer of sand, rock, then the rest of my sand when I laid my bed. I do love the eggcrate idea mainly because rocks wont really move that way... but that being said I have only done it once.

I'm not going to use it on my next build. I like the idea of it,but I feel it may trap detrius. I love my pistol. He moves some material....

I use egg crate on all my tanks with sand, and to your question, no as long as you have a couple of inches of sand the egg crate will not be a problem for your shrimp or other burrowing organisms.

I use it and never had any trouble, except that I had to half-unbuild my tank to get the murderous little beastie out of there. Tiger pistol started killing fish.

I placed egg crate only under the rocks. Both pairs of gobies and pistols have been in my tank for couple years no issues.
