This is a good thread.. I have also noticed that for some reason when I add new egg crate to my frag tank it seems to take on a role of getting covered with algae then after time it goes away, no serious changes in water quality and the old rack had just coraline.. I don't know but I still use it lol..
I actually noticed it fairly recently after swapping out the egg crate to raise it higher.. A week after its covered with film, another week goes to what looks like short Hair algae then about a month later it's gone.. So I can see why people think it's leaching something but honestly I never heard of it until I read it on rc though =) .. Me I don't care as the algae is always temporary and I've never noticed anything other than that.
