Eggrate kill shimmer lines?

Cancer Sucks
For those of you that have eggcrate covering your tank (e.g. to keep wrasses) do you still get shimmer lines from the lights?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike, i have never placed eggcrate over the water. I have always used it on the open back section of the canopy. This will keep fish in the tank, but not off the center divider if they leep up there. However, I have never seen or heard of a fish dying up there. They will usually flop there bones back in the water.

Wouldn't the eggcrate over the water interfere with total light penatration into the tank?

According to Calfo it helps efficiency. I don't think it would eliminate the ripples, that would need a broader spread such as florescent tube to happen. Just my guess, time for another experiment? I would be curious about the efficiency factor.

Scott, just putting it across the back is a pretty good idea. It would still leave my lights unprotected, but I guess I might be ok since my bulbs are 12" off the water.

John, do you have a link for the Calfo article? It would be interesting to find out, but I don't have any way to measure efficiency before and after.

Mike a have a Lux meter if you want to borrow it and experiment. I would be curious to see the results of LUX at angles. But I guess if the eggcrate is kept close to the bulb, it will be fine. I was imagining that it was on top of the tank while the lights were 10" above that.

It would be a neat experiement to measure the LUX at angles with the eggcrate placed at different distances from the bulb. My hypothesis would be that at increasing angles from the light source would have decreasing LUX levels and that increasing the distance of the eggcrate away from the light source would exponentially reduce the LUX levels at increasing angles.

Let me know if you want to borrow it, I have two meters, one allows measurement under the water surface.

Hmmm, I have three days off in a row (new schedule at work) starting tomorrow, maybe I will play around with this.

I think I've decided to just cover the back opening with the eggcrate, but hey, if you have time off, I would love to hear your results!
