is possible for a female clown to lay a clutch of eggs without there being a male in the tank? i seen what looked to be one just before lights out didnt get a pic so i will tomarrow.

Could you list all inverts in the tank? It might help.
How big was the egg mass?

While I haven't seen clowns do this, I have seen a number of other fish species lay eggs without a male present in the tank. So I expect it's quite possible.
