eh off topic?

Lots of folks do sand in a freshwater tank. Unless its for african cichlids though sand has to be inert, which means silica. The best readily available is tahitian moon if you like black or pool filter sand if you like white. If you use argonite the lower pH of freshwater will dissolve the sand until it has risen the pH and the hardness of the tank water. Most tropical freshwater fish like a neutral to acidic pH and medium to soft water. With the exception of African Cichlids of course.

I have used sand in a 75 gallon fresh water community tank. I liked it alot and the little cories seemed to like it a bunch, too.

The maintenance seemed easier. The waste would sit on top of the sand and was easy to siphon out without getting too much sand.

I used silica sand form Home Depot. It was very cheap.

here is mine I use sand in all three of my freshwater tanks

i know that is true every few months or so I have to do a deep cleaning on my filters because they start making a horrible noise..due to sand getting tin the filter.

I use the Tahitiian Moon sand in my Marine tanks. I found it very hard to keep looking clean, so I mixed it with regular colored play sand and it looks much better. Because of the salt and pepper (lots more pepper) it is harder to see any junk laying on the substrate.
