EHEIM Filter

I recently bought a EHEIM Professional II Series model 2026 canister filter from someone on RC but he did not have any filters for it. I am going to use it on my 29 gal and wanted to know what media I should use. This is for a reek tank.

I know that they sell stuff to keep ammonia and phosphates down and other things I could put in there but I don’t know if any of you use these types of filters and could help me out on this.

For a reef tank, the majority of the filtration is typically done using live rock. Rule of thumb is around a pound per gallon, so for a 29 gallon, that would be around 30 lbs. If you have a reasonable bioload, that should keep the nitrates down. Phosphates will be kept down by using good clean source water (typically reverse osmosis / deionized water), good protein skimming, and feeding parsimoniously. There are other methods for keeping nutrients down as well.

Cannister filters are most helpful in a reef tank for polishing the water and pulling out particulate matter. I'm not familiar with that canister, but sometimes people run carbon in their cannister filter, as well as put live rock rubble in there for additional biological filtration. Any artificial media you put in there should be cleaned/replaced frequently to avoid a build up of nitrates.
