Eheim Pumps

I'm looking at using the Eheim 1262 pump for my closed loop but the connections are
Hose Connection (Suction Side): 1"
Hose Connection (Pressure Side): 3/4"
can I make "plumb" them bigger to get better flow. Or should I keep them this size.

you probably would get good results if you stepped the intake up to 1.5" and had 1" out. Just get some reduction bushings and experiment a little.

What are you planning on doing for the actual outputs?

Pete

Im going to have 4 holes drilled into the back of the tank. 1 as the intake and 3 as the output. "I think"

really I had thought about using one but I will stay clear. Thanks for saving me money, time and frustration.

Rich,
If you increase the pressure side from 3/4" to 1", I think you'll get the result that you're looking for. Eheim uses the same pump for the 1260, 1262, and 1264 model. According to the schematic for the pumps from Eheim, the only differences between the 1262 and 1264 is the bigger hose adapter for the pressure side. I haven't seen the 1264 in the US, but its rated for 1189 g/h. The 1262 is rated around 900 g/h.

I have the 1260 and 1262 and the difference is the suction side being bigger (part#7443670).

I wonder if you follow pennilessreefer suggestion and upgrade both the suction and pressure sides. Hmmmm....

Is there any other pump that keeps keeps up with the Eheim. VS noise and heat. I plain to run all these pumps external to beat the heat.

Wondering how the 1260 and the 1262 are the same pump, one uses 65W and the other 80W. I see that the size is the same though. Reason I ask is that I have a 1262 and its a bit too much flow. If I decrease the nozzle of the suction size, will it flow less, and also use less electricity?

Keep in mind that if you increase the output tubing you will reduce your head height (and water pressure).

By decreasing the output tubing size you increase the water pressure and may not give you the results you are looking for, wattage wise. Most common way, I started in the hobby, was to put a ball valve on the output side of the pump to regulate the flow back to the tank (if the pump is moving too much water). Again, I don't think you will reduce the wattage. If I remember right, you only want to do this on a pressure rated pump.

Just never reduce the intake, this can damage your pump.

Okay, I was confused by chris4869 saying "I have the 1260 and 1262 and the difference is the suction side being bigger (part#7443670). "

So I'm probably going to go ahead and order the 1260...Thanks

Are there any iproblems with using some stainless steel hose clamps on my new Eheim pump 1262, since we noticed the slightly loose hose barb, as mentioned here on this thread? The pimp in in the sump. NO corrosion problems? Thanks for any info!

I would not recommend running an E-heim pump externally on a saltwater tank for htree reasons:

#1 I believe that it will make very difference on heat transfer - the pump is cooled by the water flowing through it, not the aitr outside of it. Water is a much better conductor of heat than air is. (If you touch an E-heim pump while it is running it will be cool to the touch.)

#2 The only thing keeping the water inside the E-heim is two little rubber seals. If they give out your entire tank could drain out through the pump leak. Salt water is slightly abrasive, and there's a lot of debris floating aroud in a typical reef tank so this is a risk I'm not willing to take personally.

#3 It's a lot quieter if you run it internally.

I love my E-heim 1262, but I would strongly recommend that you run it internally.

I would look into an IWAKI pump, in my opinion they are quiet and are super reilable. For your setup, I would recommend 1.5" in and 1" split to three 3/4" on the outlet.

Wryknow,
Euro Reef disagrees with you. The larger RC skimmers use Eheim pumps and the skimmers are designed to run externally.

Ditto. I know a lot of people using Eheim externally, and if there had been a problem with it leaking, I'm sure we would have heard of the testimonials/rant by now.

*knock on wood cuz I have them Eheim pumps up the ying yang... and outside of my tank*
