Electrobes' K.I.S.S. 40Br Thread

Bugger, I've been away for far too long, so sorry guys. Things have been pretty crazy and I just recently started getting back to the forums and clubs. I will be back soon with updates, need to borrow a friends camera as mine just died.

So far things are fairly the same. I've had few problems with the tank except for a minor case of zoo eating nudibranchs. The tank is moving along, maturing and what not but the corals seem to be doing well for the most part. The tank basically looks like it has a couple frags... fairly empty.

I am still looking at getting more corals.. have a nice addition coming in next Saturday (I'm hosting a reef meeting), and hopefully will get to the stores next weekend as well. Looking forward to updating :D

Some things to note as of late:

- Food:I stopped feeding form one mini-pellets and cyclop-eez. I may eventally jump into the making your own food deal but a fellow reefer wanted me to try doing away with the mentioned foods and if not trying the home-made food, go for Mysis Shrimp. I already had it but will use it as the main feeding source. I haven't noticed a problem with phosphates or nitrates, but if mysis makes everyone happy then I'll stick with it.

- Additives: I still dose some Iodide from time to time but I've had to increase my Magnesium dosing and my Alk as well. Not really sure why yet, but according to my tests.. it calls for it. My calcium is also slipping so I may have to add that as well... I was hoping the Kalk would solve both issues considering I run a softy dominated tank.. maybe it's a corralline growth spurt?

- Lights: I now run 2 X Aquasuns and 1 X Actinic. Livestock seems happy and for now this will be fine as I am really looking for some growth. Maybe down the line I'll add another actinic bulb once the growth is there.

- Projects: I do still have projects to do... the one that comes immediately to mind is that though my system is stupid simple I still have a slight wire mess in the stand. Since I'd like a nice display stand for the dual Ranco, I plan on building it and then have the wires mess sorted out.

- Water health: On average the parameters are pretty normal. A slight dip in the mag, calcium, and alk but everything still remains the same. I don't have a test for nitrates or ammonia, but the water is pretty clear and noone is showing signs of stress.
I still haven't done a water change and this is intentional. My tank is fairly young and I do like to keep a somewhat nutrient tank.. so this ma never be a chore considering my replenishments are doing well for the tank plus my over-sized skimmer is doing it's job well.

I am currently building a website for the reef that may or may not get put up, but I am hoping to borrow a friends camera tonight to take some shots tomorrow. As soon as I get some pics I'll post them. The tank is definitely looking modest (i.e. coral population is still fairly low) but soon enough I'll be getting a couple more pieces in! :)

Very neat thread, not sure how I missed this one. We deffinately need some updated tank shots once you get a camera and a little time.

Long time no post! As promised some new pics with the powerhead/wavemaker installed on the tank. I have to say right off the bat my tank is exactly where I want it to be minus the coral growth (It's too new). The flow is perfect, the lighting for now (For growth) is perfect, I have no algae, good coral stock, I do wish I had more corraline growth but aside from that I couldn't be happier. All I need to do now is just keep the parameters where they are and just be patient.

The parameters are:
Salifert Tests:

Magnesium: 1300
Calcium: 425
Alk: 10.4 dKH / 3.7 meq/L
pH: 8.3
Salinity: 1.025-1.027
Temp: 76-78

I should mention this... many of corals' colors are washed out due to me using 2 X Aquasuns and only 1 X Super Actinic. That and I am using an old digital camera with no photoshopping (Quick pics).

In the future I will prob either switch out an aquasun for another actinic or maybe add an actinic (My ballast is for 4 X bulbs... but my reflector only fits three).

I've added another MJ-900 to the tank. This now means that I have one MJ-900 on 24-7 and 3 MJ-900's on the natural wavemaker. TBH the combo workds very well. The tank seems to be doing very well and even the skimmer is behaving nicely by not spitting out too many micro-bubbles into the display.

The new corals are also doing well though the xenia still looks like it is acclimating. Aside from that coral the rest look absolutely great. All that is left is keeping the parameters consistent and just plain ol' patience. :)

Some new photos and news:

I mentioned I got some new corals and here are some pics of them... though not all. My camera sucks, I need a new one, but for now it's the only one I have.

I tested my parameters and here they are: (Today at 3:06pm)

pH: 8.3

Salinity: 1.027 (I need to calibrate my refractometer... I don't think this is right)

Magnesium: 1320ppm

Alk: 12dKH /4.28 meq/L

Calcium: 440ppm

Temp: 77.4 F

Notes: All the corals look great. Even the Xenia is starting to perk up! I fed the tank it's weekly usual... selcon soaked mysis shrimp.

and all this time i thought you had put a stop to the project. its good to finally see the fruits of your labor.

nice work!

great looking tank! the aquascape looks really natural compared to some tanks I see, and I love that fact that most of your corals are softies/ zoas/ mushrooms! the less rare zoas and softies dont get enough love, IMHO. the only thing that I dont like about the rockwork is that it doesnt leave much swimming room, but as long as you dont plan on adding angels, larger wrasses or large clownfish, it will be great!

actually, I tried to take some of the mound of rock reef look for my 20g nano I just set up!
