Electrobes' K.I.S.S. 40Br Thread

Alrighty, I got some current pictures for y'all. I am fairly new to Picasa but I find using "Auto-Color" and "Sharpen" shows the tank more realistically than what the untampered pics show. One of these days I'll learn how to use the camera's settings properly. Anyways here are the photos:

Thanks guys! :)

I am really looking forward to getting some fish in there soon. I also need to clean up the sand bed some as some old parts of it (fused sand, etc) got stirred up from the re-working of the rockscape.

I am close to needing to replace the lights (I use 3 X VHO bulbs). I currently use 2 X Super Actinics (UV Lighting Co.) and 1 X Aquasun (Also by UV Lighting Co.). I was toying with the idea of changing the bulbs with something like the 454nm bulbs and a 50/50 (Actinic White). What are y'alls thoughts??

The open aquascape looks much better than that huge pile of... =) The tank look great. Are you going to mod those Maxi? give the tank much more flow.

suck up.

Fufu: My tank is all softies minus the Blasto Merletti frag I have (The other LPS frags will go into my wife's biocube for her new office). Having the AC500 + the MJ-900 thus far have given me plenty of flow in the right spots. I actually have the AC500 throttled back about halfway because it's too much flow otherwise.

Once I get my chaeto into the AC500, I'll most likely have too throttle it 100%. :)

A couple things to mention.. not necessarily an update

- I followed Randy's instructions in making a 35ppt calibrating solution for the refractometer. I have long been suspicious of the readings my refractometer has been giving of my tank.

So after making the solution and letting it sit for a few days I whipped out the refractometer and... holy poop it's 5ppt off!?!?

No way I say.. that just can't be right. So I test my tank after calibrating it.... my tank reads 27ppt or 1.021... if this is true, then a big ruh-roh. That reading is a lot lower than I'd like it to be. :eek1:

What's weird is that I've been mixing 2.5 cups of Reef Crystals (The same when I used IO) for every 5 gallons of water I made. I always thought doing that gives you 1.025 (About 33ppt), but it's looking like I am wrong. I'm thinking that actual is number is 1.021 as listed on the package.. but they measure by weight, not by cups and naturally I don't have a scale.

- I also took a shot of the tank's surroundings... my "fish room" as the wife calls it:

Looking great. Is there someone outside the window?

I have always use RO/DI water but to -be-honest, not very often. And I think I read somewhere that is not the best way to do it. So I got a Lamotte Hydrometer kit, and again not very easy to pinpoint visiually. I had always been given the advice to use a good lab-grade hydrometer, but they really are not very easy for me to use.

Dang I hope no one's out there. It's a wonder cops haven't come by to ask what that blue light is!

I did as well (Use RO/DI as a calibration fluid), but after hearing the peoples mention it isn't as accurate as it should be, I was eventually pointed to Randy's article on making the calibration solution. Considering how easy it was to do, I gave it a try and the above is the result. Here's hoping I didn't screw up.. which is a very real possibility. ;)

yeah, that's always my fear...am I more accurate than the instrument! You could do it 3 times and take the average though.

BTW, I just thought I saw Jesus in the reflection on the wall. Kind of scary if you ask me.

I wish I had known you needed the calibration solution. I made 2 liters of it per Randy's instructions and I think that will be more than a lifetime supply lol.

O yeah I hear you need some cheato :) But your not going to Scott's tonight. :(

Give me a call sometime. I have some spare cheato, that rubbermaid vat( if you want it) and a few frags you may want :)

Thanks Ron, in truth it was a good learning experience plus now that I constantly see the 2L solution, I'll be better about checking it monthly. I have to admit I am still shocked at what I saw.. and a bit embarrassed at my ignorance thinking that 2.5 cups of RC salt gave 5G of 1.025 salt water. Now I will slowly raise the SG level to 1.024-.025 with the water changes.

Man I am so envious at you going to Scott's store tonight! I really was looking forward to going, and it sucks I can't at the last minute. Those corals he posted looked fun, especially those shrooms! If you get some, lemme know I'll definitely buy a polyp off of you. :D

Next time you know you will be in town, gimme a ring. I'd love to finally get some chaeto and would like to buy that tub off of you too. I am happy to report that I finished plumbing the tubs, bulkheads, and drains plus nothing leaks! I'll be making the prototypes either tomorrow or the day after and we'll see whether they meet my standards or not. :)
