I managed to get a peice of this unique coral this weekend while I was out and about.

I have done some reading on it and it seems to need pretty much typical SPS conditions.

Has anyone here had one before? any tips?

Thanks

Pachyseris rugosa. Pretty neat coral. I had one before the accident years ago and wouldnt mind finding another. Saw one at a lfs the other day but he wanted way too much for it.

it would start growing all of these little buds on the backside. it died along with everything else before I got to see what the colony would look like with all of the buds grown out.

didnt seem too picky as far as care

here is a pic from right when I first got it

Pachyseris is one of my long-time favorites. Eric Borneman once called it the No-Polyp Stoney coral and it's an apt description. Bright light and strong current (sediment settling on it is the biggest thing to avoid, as it doesn't take much for long before you'll start to get tissue recession underneath the sediment, and once that happens it's easy for boring algae to get a foothold on the skeleton and cause further recession). It'll lose battles with pretty much every other coral out there if they end up in close proximity, so avoid that as well.

yes it as an interesting peice in the lfs. I got it from a 'browned out' tank. It is about 5" tall and 2 1/2"-3" wide. I only paid $10 for it. When I got it home and under better lighting the green between the folds came out really well.

I cant wait to see how it turns out long term. I dont have the bright green rim around it but hopfully it comes back.
