Possibly calcification, hard shelled inverts will losen their shells and absorb calcium prior to a molt inorder to harden the next exoskeleton. It's pretty easy to predict an upcoming molt by looking for white spots in the invert's eyes and on the carapace. If I seen a white crab I'd expect it to molt withen the week or next week latest.
Prolly molting mine did it too not sure which stage but he's just getting a new she'll, if u find a shell in the ground don't worry as he will be brown and hiding for a few days while his new she'll hardens
