Emergency Sump!!!

At about 3 in the morning a heard a loud crack and woke up to find that my sump had cracked and was leaking water. All of my current equipment runs out of the sump so I need a quick replacement. I was wondering if I could use just a food safe plastic tub until I have time to rebuild one with a glass tank and baffles?

Yes.

The only thing you need to watch is those tubs STRETCH if they aren't made to hold liquids. I used one to hold RO for YEARS with no problems.

Thanks. So it will be fine without baffles? I was planning on doing this all without splitting it into compartments.

Short answer. Yes. :) (fine without it)

Long Answer...

IMO Baffles are designed for skimmers....#1. to maintain a chamber at a constant height for a skimmer and #2. to allow skimmer overflow air bubbles to surface within baffling before getting sucked into the return pump. Some bubles can come up from water flowing in, but skimmers are usually the big problem.

The first issue can be maintained temporarily by topping off often. The second issue can be taken care based on how your skimmer is set up.

I can't think of any other reason to need a baffle? :)

Having said that...I have a 100g rubbermaid feed tub as my "sump" with no baffling. :) I have a "drip in" top off that will keep the sump at the same height and it is so huge that bubbles have PLENTY of time to float up before getting pulled into them pump!

I guess I did forget one more use.....Refugiums. I don't use a baffle setup for that, I use egg crating. :)
