how bad does the nitrate and nitrite has to be in order for the mantis to die? ph 8.2 and ammonia is 0. i just want to now if the nitite is 40 will it die hat do i have to do?? help!! mantis in desperate need...

I would say a small water change and add some live rock "to help the nitrifying bacteria do it's job a lil quicker". If it is your No2 (nitrite) is high then your tank is still in it's cycling process and you don't want to do too much to disturb that. Adding more liverock to the system will add to the bacteria to quickly and more effectively break down the nitrite into a more tolerable nitrate. A small water change accompanied with rock or live sand will help by leaps and bounds. If your tank isn't new or in it's first month "Did anything die?". If so then a larger water change is a must because your tank is older and already has a stable amount of denitrifying bacteria that cannot cope with the increase of organic decay. Ammonia and nitrite are tolerated by some mantis species more than others so I would'nt fret just yet. Hope that helps. Good Luck.

all righty thanks i hope this makes it andmore suggestions will help. it is not cylcying, but i did a change change. i think the mantis is in shock. so i did water change and now he is in his pvc. before all this i did a change water change and after that the mantis started to kill my snails and later belly up. i did a change water change it was normal. i hope it will pull off until later.
I noticed in another thread you said: "thanks everyone i know why i added this one med from drsfoster and smith and it disapeared it was algae indeed. still any comments are good." You need to work on your grammar... but that's another topic.
Was this the same tank? If so, what medication did you add? If it was something like "ChemiClean" or some other "magic algae killer", it's almost certainly an antibiotic that has wiped out your cycle and will likely crash your tank. It's probably also toxic to your mantis.

Is your tank cycled or not? - "it is not cylcying" (sic) Is not very specific.
I think what you honestly need to do, is get rid of your mantis shrimps now, and focus on doing some more research and reading before venturing into this realm.
You have made a multitude of posts asking questions on here. Have you bothered going through the last 6-7 years of posts and done your own independant research? I'm just curious, because you stated in your profile you have 14 years experience in the hobby, yet you ask some of the most common questions that a someone with 14 years experience in the hobby should not be asking.

+1 what dismalorb said. I was honestly about to come here and say that myself. IMO you've done nothing to make me think your worthy to take care of a guppy, nevermind a peacock. You've done things that make me think that you just saw a peacock in a pet store and bought it, a small aquarium, live rock and sand without any research whatsoever. And then you go and add smething to kill algae wihout *any* research or thought about it. You are aware that inverts are sensitive to a whole slew of chemicals, including many antiabiotics, and mantis shrimp moreso, right? And you are aware that various chemicals will slaughter your bacteria population, right? Now I don't like to talk to people like this, but really your asking for it.

the thing is that my friend is one of the top 10 people who knows and breeds mantis shrimps and he usally takes care of the problems, but the thing is that he is away and i needed help. also most of that 14 years was spent on freshwater. i was just introduced to saltwater and reefing. if you look at comp. history you will also see that i tore up google trying to findany info. just some i really needed help and didnt understqand. if you really dont like it why do you bother posting. what do you get out of posting bad comments? you are trying an low class person i just wanted some help and here you are just here. so whatever bro peace.
Dude, not trying to call you out on this too harshly -- but I was under the impression that NO ONE breeds stomatopods successfully in captivity. Certainly not enough that there's a "Top 10" list. (I believe Dr. Roy's lab may have had some success with it, but don't quote me on it.) If you've got a buddy out there successfully captive breeding mantis shrimp and raising the larvae, I'm sure Dr. Roy would like to meet him.

Look up "The Lurkers Guide to Stomopods" ... its a good place to get basic info about Mantis shrimp in general. And btw nobody I have every heard of sucessfully breeds and raises mantis. Ive heard of mantis carrying eggs but never someone sucessfuly raising any amount of the young. Although if Im wrong I would love to hear how its done... always looking to expand my knowlage of aquaculture

well i has raised a couple successfully. he has 4 peacocks that he raised from .25 of an icnch to now full size that is about 11-12 inches. anyways i have read Lurkers guide and found it to be helpful. anyways can anyone tell me what will happen if the salinity is too high? i never seen this happen and i just wanted to see what will happen. they will all die right? because some people raise mantis in salities of like 2.6-2.8 and they turned out okay.
One of the most important freshwater lessons that you learned definitely applies to saltwater tanks too- and that is PATIENCE!
If you already know about the cycling process and the dangers/afteraffects of adding unknown medications to a tank- why are you asking about them? You already learned that in Saltwater 101.
While it is great that you have a knowledgeable buddy to help you out- he really should have thought twice about leaving an animal in your care that you clearly are unprepared for.
I would love to see this top 10 ranking of mantis breeders- it would make a wonderful addition to this forum to get your friends involved. Please extend our invitation to them to spare a little of their time for us to pick their brains and add to the limited knowledge base available about mantis shrimp.

OK, pick an age. 16 or 27? Surely no matter how much money you have, the local school district would not allow a 27 year old man to attend school as a Junior (11th grade). Unless you started keeping fish at the age of 2, there's a whole lot of BS being flung in here.

Yep, no one has succesfully bred and raised any mantis shrimp, save 2 or 3 neogonodactylids and G. chiragra. There is no "top ten list" that I have ever heard about. I don't want to get a "raise" out of anybody. You truly strike me as someone who shouldn't keep a mantis shrimp without more research. And a peacock is not a good learning tool. Was I harsh about it? fo'sho. why? Because it got my point across. I spoke truly, and if it was harsh, sorry but thats how I felt about it. I also tried to help you, and my biggest advice is for you to get rid of your mantis before you kill it. Give it to someone knowledgeable, or back to the store. If you feel your ready for another one in the future, go and get something APPROPRIATE for your tank size.

thank you all for helping me with this peacock mantis. it is doing fine now and it is thriving. anyways to clear things up i am 16 and i have been around fish every since i was 2. i did make a mistake putting 2.5 instead of 1.025 and people are trippin' over that. and i think the people who put down people is just whack i guess they were never once a noob. whatever though it is thriving and it is all fine... thank you and let us meet once more......
