I know that the fluvals are not the best for reefs, so I have been wondering if I should switch it out with a Emporer I have from a tank is the past. I do not use bio balls in the fluval and I rinse or replace the foam pads every other week. I think the fluval is great for flow, not sure how the emporer would match up.

I have two fluvals 404 now called 405 . i like them but the thing that makes me mad about them is that they have that cheap plastic cap for the propeller that brakes all the time thus creating no sucking for the water. i finally went to buy a emperer. and i love it its so versitle . you could use any media in the extra packs or take them out and use bio balls. all the movement is great .

the other thing to consider is that you might want to get the mag 350 deluxe its like the fluval but alot better .

i been trying to get my setup going. i have two 55's and i think that i am going to have one with sand . that one will hold my emperer 400 and the other i will do the berlin method bare bottome and just use a mag 350 deluxe that will move alot of water or you could also get the mag 350 pro that comes also with a bio wheel making it super versitle in its filtration . plus cleaning on both of these is alot easier than the fluvals .

HOB power filter only creates a lot of surface water movement as the water cascade down from the filter. It does not create any lower water movement, this is what you need when you have LR's in the tank. If you have a Emperor or Fluval, make sure you suppliment the water flow by a few powerheads.
