Encrusting Sponge?

I have this "thing", I'll call it an encrusting sponge, since sponge is the closest thing I've been able to find in searching for an ID. It sort of looks like crazy glue when it sets, white almost translucent. Has 3-4 hollow tubes coming out of the top. it's been slowly encrusting around a small rock with a pipe organ coral on it.
What's the best way to erradicate it? If i try to pull it or cut it out will it release any toxins?

Don't even ask for a photo. I've spent the last 2 days trying to figure out the process for posting one. Maybe I should borrow someone's 5 year old to show me how!

Easy way for a photo- get a photobucket.com account, download to photobucket and copy the image(it will have a link for the picture) from there to here. 1-2-3 picture on RC.

It sounds like some type of sponge to me, which is common on live rock. you can pick it off, cover it with epoxy or super glue. To my knowlege they don't release toxins, but I am sure someone will chime in on that.

unless its covering your coral I'd leave it as it's a natural filter most of mine died off when I removed the rock from the water during the tank move they get air traped in them and it kills them don't know about any toxins

I have some clear white ones and some yellow ones. I just leave them be unless near a coral. They sorta flake / peel off with tweezers pretty easily. I don't think it releases toxins, I mean I'm not dead and neither is stuff in my tank anyways.

Actually, my GSP has come up on a yellow one - I'm watching to see who wins. I put all my money on green.

I've been busy making meaningless posts, but have meant to reply to this thread... I came across this technique and have found it to be the best one out there for dealing with invasive sponges... There are certain types of sponges that can choke out corals, but using a waterpik is a good way to eradicate them...

What a great idea Randy, thanks. It is starting to choke out a pipe organ , so I may have to try it.

Where that is located, you can probably use a toothbrush for removal...



BTW, good job posting a picture...

It's on the left side of the tank. I'm going to try removing it with next water change.
