Literally 1% of all live coral harvested makes it into the hobby which I would consider conservationalism meanwhile developing countries harvest millions of tons of coral every year to be used in various industrial applications. Most of these countries have no laws for conservationalism nor are they obligated under international law to comply to endangered species acts.
With 58% of the worlds coral reefs currently threatened and projections of 90% of the worlds coral becoming extinct in the next 40 years it will not be long before all of us in this conservationalist hobby will be required to attain a federal lisence to propagate any coral species whether natural or aquascaped.
There are many coral in this hobby that have ONLY survived due to the hobby keeping them alive. Eg; paulao neon green nepthea, extinct in the wild. One my my personal favorites.
Btw anyone have a frag of this in my area?
