Sanjay, an IS lens is for "image stabilization." Not sure if that's a generic term or one unique to Canon. They're quite expensive but all but eliminate camera shake. I still have a long way to go to understanding all this camera jargon---all those settings! I bought an instructional DVD specifically for my camera. I assume you can buy something similar for the Nikon if you are interested. It's fun to experiment.
