Just thought I'd post this since a lot of the reefing folks I know are also interested in the environment and may be interested in something free and local like this :)

Bill Belleville, an environmental writer and documentary filmmaker who has written extensively on nature, conservation, and adventure travel, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in room 223 of the University of Central Florida Library on the main campus, 4000 Central Florida Blvd. His most recent book, "Losing It All to Sprawl: How Progress Ate My Cracker Landscape," was named one of the Best Books of 2006 by the national Library Journal. "Marjorie's Wake," Belleville's new documentary film, retraces the journey of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings on the St. Johns River. The film captures the many ways in which the river has shaped literature, art and music over time. Funded by a grant from the UCF Learning Institute for Elders (LIFE), the event is free and open to the public.

I'll try to be there as well. I've read some of his stuff in the past and would love to hear him speak! Should be a great event if anyone is considering it.

Chrisstie: Thanks for the info
I must admit this Florida cracker has been guilty of trying to grow to many exotic palms.

I hope to be able to make this, but its two days for our big project debut in senior design (read: the project graduation depends on) so I may not but if someone else is able to make it please share on some of the discussion. Maybe I'll manage to sneak over to the union to catch it.

I think I also heard there's a grass near similar to st. augustine that uses half the water? i'll have to check into that but gotta get back to my schoolwork for now :(

Don't worry Chrisstie most will not make it.
I think the St isn't the Saint. Bahia is more drought tollerent, but your lawn mower will hate it and cause some unneeded ware. Just like aquariums there is 1,000,001 ways to do it. With all the options I need to go.

I feel kind of on a tight leash as far as landscaping is concerned. I'm in a townhome and there was an original landscaping plan setup by the developer so I am kind of stuck with whatever they chose. Most of the time submitted plans to change something noticable (exchanging your lawn may be considered a bit drastic) don't pass becuase we need to "match" the look of the other townhomes.

Though, that didn't stop me from planting a citrus tree in my back yard instead of the ugly .. i forget how to spell them. Crate myrtle? The ones that every spring you chop the heads off and they keep coming back. I think this season we'll be supplied with our own tangelos :)

Strangly, where I carved pumpkins for halloween I have pumpkins growing out of the ground and the lawn service guys have left them alone. My fingers are crossed, though I might need to fence in any fruit bearing flowers from the animals nearby.
