Hi all, my name is David, im from Argentina. I want to know what would be "Necessary" Equipment for a 300 gallon tank.

My guess is:

1-Skimmer
2-Calcium reactor
3-Kalkwasser reactor
4-Auto top off system

Anything else i may need? allready got lights so that is out of the question.

thanks

david

is this a reef or fowlr? if reef, what type of corals, softies, lps, sps, mixed?

not necessary but alot of big tanks have a controller, ozone, uv, refugiums, closed loops and/or flow pumps

erics3000, on my big tank i am having 7 gallons changed daily using a litermeter III water exchange module.

Even if you DIY everything... Large tanks require more. Where you might spend 50.00 to 70.00 on a 125. You will spend 75.00 to 125.00 on a 300. I spend around 275.00 to 300.00 on electricity each month alone... And around 25.00 to 30.00 on food, 50.00 in salt, additives, reactor media, rowaphos, charcoal, etc., etc. Add in prorated lighting for new bulbs, pump replacement and general equipments for the year. And I come out with somewhere around 500.00 to 600.00 per month just to operate the system... I'm not saying you can't run a large tank on a budget... But just make sure you are aware of basic costs... Oh, and don't forget the cost if you want to add fish and coral.

Clekchau thanks for the info, something new to research (litermeter III water exchange module).

I am in the planning stage myself and contemplating. I know I am hooked but also concerned with the routine maintnance cost of the tank. I don’t mind pumping a few grand into. I want to do as much diy as I can. I also want good equipment, catch 22. That is the really fun part to me. The routine salt, food, and electricity will impact the budget for livestock. I also want to keep my 75 gallon predator tank. Am I greedy? If my electric goes up about $100 and I spend $100 in salt and food I’ll be happy. I really need to figure it out. It is just more fun planning and designing. Thanks for the info guys.

What is a Kalkwasser reactor? So many people talk about them and I just don't know what they are for

"I spend around 275.00 to 300.00 on electricity each month alone..."

Ricks, what size tank are you running? Just wondering. Thx

OMG. I must have done some time traveling. Didn't even look at the date. Reading all kinds of threads as I'm starting to plan out a tank. Sorry.

Amazing this popped up after 10 years

Tank size was 500 gallons and built in. We sold it shortly before moving. I have no tank at the house currently. But do have a 50 gallons next to my desk at work. Below is a shot of the 500 gallon and 50 gallon. Quite the down size?

Happy reefing
