Equipment Questions

I have been thinking about a few things to enhance my tank. One regards flow and the other lighting.

Flow:
Does anyone have any experience with the Tunze wavebox?
1) How well does it work?
2) Would it work in a 90?
3) How does it mess with the overflow? Will it make a durso go nuts?
4) Any difference between this and putting some powerheads on a wavemaker?

Lighting:
Does anyone here use T5s? I'm thinking about adding some T5s to my current PC only setup -- either that or switching out to all T5. I could easily do a retrofit in my canopy for T5s. I read a lot on the general forums about how well T5s work, but I'd like to know if anyone local has experience with this kind of lighting.

Thanks,

Jack

Tunze in a 90 will require a controller, without it there will be too much current, I have one and the model I have does not have a controller availble for it therefor I cant use it, it is way too much.....

I'm not really talking about the tunze stream, but the wavebox. It's that big box thing that you stick on one side of an aquarium and it makes waves by pushing a ton of water out of the top (I think). You get locally higher water that pushes across the aquarium (a wave), that then circles down and back to the pump. At least that is how it looks like it works. It is supposed to simulate natural wave action. I thought it might make a better (and less cluttered) substitute for powerheads on a wave timer -- like maybe I could set it up behind some of the rock work.

Well, I think I'll pass on the wavebox. What about lights?

Anyone here with experience with T5s? My canopy is not tall enough for halides and so I'm thinking about trying these out...

I forget, what is on your tank now? Is it 2 x 96W PC or 4 x 96W?

What are you trying to achieve with different lighting, and what are you planning on keeping that requires more light than you have now? You are starting to get into religion as you compare T5, VHO, and haldes.

Did you see the T5's in my tank? I have a 24W x 2 T5 HO hood in the front. I really liked the T5's and thing that 48W (2 bulbs) was much brighter than a 65W PC bulb. I have read that the reflector quality is very important, moreso then with PC. I had a cheap hood (Jebo, bought from eBay), but bought some good lights to put in it.

The downside of T5 is that you'll need more overall bulbs, but they do last longer than PC bulbs. If you do upgrade your lighting, consider getting a 4x or 6x 110W VHO setup. It would be easy to retrofit, requires fewer bulbs than T5 and gives great color, and the bulbs are probably cheaper as well.

P.S. If you do upgrade your lights, I may want your current setup for my upcoming 90 FOWLR project.

Dude... I hope the move is going well. I'm going to be at Duke next Friday for a meeting. If you are around maybe we can get together for lunch or something.

I have some lower light sps (montipora) that are doing fine under my PC's (4x65). I have them kind of higher up in the top 1/3 of the tank. I was thinking of giving the PC's a boost, or replacing the PC's. I'm even considering halides, but T5's would be the easiest thing for me to try.

Jack,

Reefkeeping is never easy. Just get the halides and mod or replace your canopy. You won't be sorry. A canopy would cost less than $50 to build for a 90 gallon and would just be an evening in the garage.
