Ernesto Turns Toward Florida!

My favorite site for hurricane projections (after the NHC):

www.wunderground.com

They're one of the few sites that will show you the actual paths the computer models are projecting. It's interesting to keep up on these and see how the paths shift as they're run and updated - all have moved eastward today.

I just got back from the LGS (local gas station), filling up gas cans. I've got 23g on hand, which will cover me for almost 3 full days. Depending on the forecasts tomorrow, I have a few more cans that I can fill. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, is my motto. If the storm doesn't come this way, the gas goes in the car...

I just hope this thing clears out quickly, without any significant damage. I have tickets to the Gator opener next Saturday, and I'd hate to miss it.

generator? all you need is a candle and a turkey baster for that tank!
see Rogger .......Im glad I was taking my sweet time setting up my new tank........BTW it was going up this weekend.....

Brian, It doesn't matter, Midas well set-it up, what difference is it going to make? Guaranty you it won’t be the last one?
Maybe is better that you get it going now, and test what are the weaknesses so you can fix them now that you don’t have any livestock in it.

well I guess its a good and bad thing I saw this morning... a FEMA emergency response vehicle

Wow they are actually preparing beforehand. That is a good thing.

You guys are giving FEMA way too much credit. For all we know, it's just some guy who lives down here, and the home office (DC) won't return his calls. :D :D

just transferred everything to the 20 gallon with the large (30+ gallon sump)

at least this way i have more water volume, so less can go wrong i suppose compared to the 5.5 gallon...

Hurricane tip: If you lose power during the storm and need to keep your tank on life support until you can start the generator, "borrow" your computer's UPS. Run a small powerhead pointed at the surface for air exchange....a decent sized UPS should be able to last a few hours easily (mine runs a a 45w Tunze 6100 for 3+ hours, a MJ would last MUCH longer). If you have an air pump and some spare PVC, make an airlift to do the same. Run as little wattage as possible to maximize run time.

If you battery powered air pumps, hold them off as a backup backup. The other methods will provide more water movement, esp. in large tanks.

The battery powered air pumps worked extremely well for me last year after Wilma.

I work at a hospital and I actually have to go to work through the storms, so I'm not home when the power goes out. The battery powered air pumps were going until I was able to get home and hook up my 90 gallon to the generator and I didn't lose so much as a hermit crab from Wilma (actually, I had an addition...my male Bangaii cardinal decided to release his fry the night after the storm and I found one in the tank! He's now in my 36 gallon tank.)

I just pray I'm lucky through this storm as well. Good luck to all of you...hope all of you and your tanks make it through safely!

I just set up a live well pump hooked to its own nozzle, and 2 12V deep cycle batteries. I got a relay at radio-shack to hold the circuit open while i have power, and on power loss it closes and turns on the live well pump. Since I loose power for a few min almost daily (every time it rains!), this should help keep my tank more stable. If anyone wants a relay to control pumps its radio shack part #275-217 and only costs $9

Don,

I am looking for something similar, but I need something to plug into that will sense electrical outages, then switch on.

have you seen anything lie this?

Thanks,
DC

just wire the coil leads on the relay to a electrical cord, and plug it in, it will activate the the double pole-double throw switch, wire your pump to the energized = off side. Upon power loss, the switch will close and turn on the pump. I have energized=on side set to a automatic charger to keep my battery charged.

I do suggest you put it in a project box for safety.
