It is not uncommon for the alkalinity to crystalize over time in the measuring cup. To be honest I do not know why it does this, but have found a good vinegar or bleach soaking followed by rinsing will take care of the problem.
You can also dilute the alk solution and dose at an appropriately higher amount and aviod the problem. Sometimes the same thing happens to IV dosers, although for me that happens more with the calcium than the alk supplement.
The footprint of the doser is approximately 8" x 14". I personally have never ran one, but I would probably bet on doing some cleaning maintenance about once a month considering how much some of that stuff crystalizes.
