ETRC President situation

We needed a total of three. Even though you're a board member you still count as a regular member also. Eddie originated it and you and I seconded it. It now needs to be brought before the board to be considered. A majority of the board will have to agree to bring it before the membership for a vote.

I gave my thumbs up, but I think Matt is a grad student. I've never heard him mention a "job" but maybe grad students are "employed" by UT and earn some stipend for doing research. Just something to consider that we may still be writing Matt out of eligibility...

Unfortunately, I'm leaving in the AM for Miami and will have almost no PC access.

Hey Art, no he actually won't...I recently discovered. It turns out that a lot of us voted for him but not enough to make him president.

I wonder if Matt has a job that I am unaware of and he makes money from it? Dear god I hope so or otherwise we are stuck STILL without a president and leaving the club in limbo from hell.

It doesn’t matter how many votes he received in the election. The proposed change states "Commercial members may not hold office, unless 2/3 voting members approve." That will require a second vote to see if the membership approve of him holding office or not.

This is starting to become a real pain in the A**.

No RA or TA? I bet if you count income from those, plus tuition paid out of grants, then his aquaculture business would be well under that. Another loophole might be since he's a family member (likely), consider the income of the family. This is why I didn't chime in on the 50% threshold; you're going to scare a lot of people off if they're now going to be asked to disclose their income if they a) make any money from aquaculture and b) want to hold office. I think the defination of what constitutes a commercial interest need some more work.

Dave

Yeah, I agree with Dave on that standpoint... Its easy to discuss these rules when they don't immediately apply directly to you... But I know I wouldn't want to tell anyone how much I make, and once I am up and running and fragging a bunch more, I wouldn't want to deal with holding office if its going to be this much of a hassle... I'd kind of just forget the money making clause and perhaps just state that if the member has a commercial interest a second vote is needed with a 2/3 majority to override his commercial status... If any member abuses his/her post with their commercial interest, don't we have some way to remove them from office??? Besides, I don't think we'd elect someone that would take advantage of the situation in a malicious way... I also think we're starting to take this a little too serious and have to remember that this is just a club, and we do this to share our enjoyment of reefing with others...

Thanks Art. I agree this is getting to be a Royal PITA but I want to see this done with so someone can take leadership, ya know?

So what about that? What if we just put the part in there that Commercial members may hold office if 2/3 of the voting members agree. That actually might work the best out of all.

I don't think there is any way Matt would not be able to be President in that situation and then we would later be able to evaluate someone based on member voting. What about it?

Someone propose it, I'll second it and maybe someone else will, then we can be done with this!

We could vote now for 2/3 approval. It doesn't say he has to earn 2/3 of the vote during the general election.

Ok, I propose that a Commercial member may hold office if 2/3 of the voting members agree. So would someone please second this so we can move on!

So, what needs to be done?

1. Do the three remaining elected officers declare the election of Matt for president invalid, assuming that he did not get 2/3 of the votes?

2. As a result, since he did win, do we take a vote to see if Matt can get a 2/3 vote of approval from the voting members. The voting would last for one week or other appropriate time. Members would vote either “in favor of Matt” or a “not in favor of Matt”. If Matt gets a 2/3 approval, he is the president. If he does not, we have a new election for president.

3. The remaining elected officers decide to put this off until the August meeting at Mel’s. At that meeting, it can be decided. However, if we do this, only those at the meeting will decide on any changes to the bylaws and on who is president.

4. Or we could just let this drag on and on.

I do not need proof of a member’s income. The member’s word should be good enough. If we get that far, I cannot see the member getting a 2/3 approval vote anyway.

So after I wrote all this, I go back and read the additional posts. SO, Arts has purposed an amendment to Section 5 to read:

Section 5 - A member shall be considered a commercial member if that member earns an income be working for a retail or wholesale establishment that sells marine or tropical fish or equipment, or someone who owns such an establishment or business. Commercial member may hold office if 2/3 of the voting members agree. Commercial members may vote.

I think?

Mel and seconded. I will be the third member to agree.

Ok, not sure if Eddie thirded this one, or not, but if not, I do... :) So we just vote on this at the Mel's meeting right??? Then everythings good again eh???

Sorry I got busy and never saw that you guys had posted.

I will PM the rest of the board with that proposed amendment and they will probably agree, then we can vote on it at my house next weekend.

Ok so all the board members have agreed on the proposed amendment that says that commercial members can hold office if, once elected, a 2/3 majority of the voting members agree.

So basically all we have to do is to hold a vote this weekend and then if 2/3 of us agree, Matt is officially president and completely kosher with the bylaws.
