Euphyllia Advice Sought....Please!!!

First thing I would do is stop chasing ph, your just creating a yo yo effect bumps up drifts back down, very stressful. I keep my alk at 7-8 and euphllia look great. Stable alk and ph are more important than exact values.

I traded a Koralia 4 I had and wasn't using for a Nano 425. I added this is to try and create more random flow. It appears to have worked at first look, almost immediately the frogspawn started streching out and up, tentacles inflating a bit. Hopefully this trend continues in the next couple days.

I am starting to believe that flow is extremely important for this type of coral, much more than other LPS.

hi !!!

i had a quick look at the other post you have...

i think flow might be part of the problem.
the return pump should be more like a quiet one 3000 and add a ball valve if the flow is to strong..

as for inside the tank.i would add 2 more pumps on a controler of some sort.
the old koralias don'r work well on timers, the newer evo ones are ok.
you could also get 2 or 3 more maxjets 12000 and shout the flow torwards the inside of the tank, not just the surface

for example i have 5 different power heads inside my 92 plus the return from the sump and my euphilias are doing great..

water is prety much like others said,i would only add:try to keep it at .026-027
temp is ok i'm at 77.5yself but 79 is ok..

and this is just to double check everything, make sure no heathers are broken or that something is letting off high voltage in the water,if they were all nice for a long time and then one day things don't look good !!!! somethings up

i will keep thinking about what could help you out
good luck /bonne chance ;)

Thanks fellow Quebecer!

I actually did borrow a Quiet One 3000 from a friend and will be hooking that up to my return this week. I should be alright for the flow at 4' head plus angles in the return plumbing. I think this will help more water get through my sump "filter".

I guess I'll need to get my hands on a multimeter to check for stray voltage, this is something I haven't considered.

Going back to power heads, I don't want to throw them all over the tank, if I make a move here it will be something like a Sea Swirl or maybe even a mp40 if I can save up the money. As I mentioned above, adding the koralia nano seems to have helped a lot.

Looking back at my old photos I can see that corals continue to bleach in spite of everything I have done. I really don't think it is lighting though so I will continue to focus on water quality and flow.

dohhh !! i had replied this morning but i guess the post didn`t work...

i mentioned that i have a spare tunze 6025 you can borrow if you like,it`s practicaly brand new..and with the 3000 as a return you can also add the MJ 1200 in there.if you can find the evnflo rotating nozel to fit the MJ that would be sweet...

as mentioned above,,maybe cuting your day time exposure would help or using only 1/2 the LEDs could work if possible..

and if your even driving by gatienau :) drop me an email !!! you can stop by a pick up some nice free SPSs and a LPSs for the trip home :)

bonne chance

thanks for the offer. Gatineau is a fair drive to borrow a power head! thanks for the offer though. As for the SPS, guess I shoudl get things in order with water paramters first too!

:) your right but i can always put it on the voyageur bus if you have a bus station near your place...cheap and fast (like 1 day)and you can ship it back when finished using it ,,,just a taugh..but like you said get the parameters in check and then play with the other things..a few good water changes and hopefully they will get better..

best of luck and let me know if you want to try out an xtra power head..

Another month has gone by, and one of the frogspawn seems to be doing better, where the torch is looking really bad. These things are finicky. As a test I got a 3 head frag from a friend, it is doing great. It opens wide every day, looks fantastic. So I added another two colored frogspawn, within a week it is also wide open and happy. Something adversely affected these poor things and whatever it was may be so engrained in their bodies that it can't be undone. Oh well, as long as a polyp remains I will keep optimistic.

I still don't know what is happening.

My nitrates and phosphates have come down.

N - less than 20ppm, P - less than .25.
Alk - 8
Ca - 420
ph - 7.9
MG - 1200
SG - 1.025

Things have really took a turn worse, except the two new ones I added, they look great. An open brain and my zoas have joined in the dying party as well. The torch is pretty much dead. I really have no explanation for what is happening. I have run a poly filter to check for metals(they change colour) and it only turned brown, meaning organics. I use RODI water for several months, I am keeping up on water changes.

Other corals, favia, birdnest, montipora are growing.

I am lost.

Euphyllia are often plaqued by small copepods that are difficult to see. They look like little fleas crawling on the polyps. Try inspecting them closely to see if you can detect these pests. If you have them, I've found two things that work. Interceptor and Dips in Bayer Insect Killer.

Euphyllia also need to be aclimated to high light very slowly. If not they will bleach rapidly. I currently keep mine in a standard 75G tank with just two 54W T5 lamps.

Here's my largest colony with 50 to 100 heads (never counted) its about the size of a half volleyball. It had planaria and euphyllia bugs when I got it. Dips were effective but came back from eggs. I followed up with a couple rounds of interceptor and FW Exit 8X dosage and I haven't seen one since. I've also found that they really don't like any direct flow.
