1234 - I like to remove the collection cup very often to make sure it is not only drained, but also cleaned. Skimmers work better IMO when the neck and collection cup are clean.

I agree, I think the gunk build-up pops more bubbles than when the surface is clean/smooth.

I think the Sedra 9000 would be great for that diameter tube as long as you don't go too tall. If you go too tall, you may have to get 2 5000's or 2 9000's.

I was thinking 20" high for the reac. cham..

You can also get them in 6' lengths to save more money. I get my tubes from Delvies as well. 8" diameter X 72" length is 142.98 comes out to 23.80 per foot. And 6" is 112.32 for 6' and thats 18.72 per foot. I also just ordered 12" diameter cast tubing from them as well but thats pretty pricey at about $330. for a 6' length, $55. per foot! You need to call to order it in 6' lengths as it is not offered on their web site.

I bought my 8" diameter tube from:

http://www.delviesplastics.com/rod tube.htm

Look for Cast Acrylic tube 1/8" wall. It is $110.00 for 4 feet...$27.50/ft.

P.S. They have 10" diameter 4 foot length for $151.00
That comes out to $37.75/ft.

Shipping to NJ for one 6' tube of 6" and one 6' tube of 8" was only $34. witch was pretty reasonable considering the length and size of the box. I believe they ship from their supplier in Chicago for longer lengths.

How much was shipping?

BTW, prices for acrylic like all petrolium based products will be going up again within the next month or so.

JDM130 - thanks for the tip...I will call and ask about the 6' sections. I ordered online and ordered 4'.

One quick question:

Is there a smaller tube inside the bigger tube? IE: my Seaclone has a smaller tube inside the larger one, does this skimmer?

If I use a 6" tube for the outside, I was thinking I could cut down the main tube of my Seaclone for the neck. It is 3.5" OD, would that work?

Thanks. I didn't think it did, but I thought I'd better make sure before I built mine. Do you think the main body of a seaclone would be about the right size for my neck and inner part of the collection cup?

Cool, thanks Pikey. That will save me a little $$.

I guess that's one way to make a SeaClone into a decent skimmer!!!! :D
